I sit as poison
pours from your mouth. Charming
as always. Rain that (burns), scars.
I have nothing to
protect me from your Lying.
my heart is (shattered) pieces.
The lies from your mouth
fall like acid, Scorching.
But you, make them (sound) like poetry.
You make me believe,
everything you’re Saying.
All the words, (lies) are beautiful.

This poem is free verse; I have organized it into four verses, three stanzas each. The first line of each stanza has 5 syllables, the second line 6 and the third line 7 (for the most part I stuck to it, there are a few places off). I also had the middle line end with an -ing verb, not rhyming though.
The content of the poem is a girl* talking about her lover who is always lying to her, who makes her believe what he says even though she know he is lying. That person is charming and the words he says sound pretty, but are like acid, they scar. I wanted the feel of an E.E. Cummings poem, unconventional form with hard pictures of emotion. I also was inspired by the song “Set Fire to the Rain” which has some to do with lying, but I liked the image of rain on fire, or rain that burns.
*(I said it was from a girl's POV, but I didn't want the reader to think it can only be from a girl's POV, because it can definitely be read from anyone's POV, so I really left it open and not specific.)

The above poem and paragraph is something I had to write for class, a 12-40 line poem that could be anything we wanted. I chose free verse because I love the look and feel of it. I chose lying because it is something I find interesting from an actor’s perspective, but also because this last year is something that has keep coming up in my life. This poem wasn't meant to be autobiographical, but by the time I turned it in, it was. So this poem is very personal to me.
I've grown a lot as a person this semester, and realize that even when you love someone a lot they can (and will at some point) lie to you, because they are only human. It really hurts to know that they don't love you like you thought, and don't want to be friends any longer, but you know you have to let go.
Also, because Adele's newest CD "21" (which I adore) came out right before I wrote this, I was listening to "Set Fire to the Rain" a lot which truly inspired me. I loved the chorus part that goes:
"But there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew,
All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true,
And the games you'd play, you would always win, always win."
